OUR CIGARS’ WORLDKNOWN BRANDS

Cohiba

Cohiba

COHIBA WAS FOUNDED IN 1966 AND OWES ITS ORIGIN TO THE EXCEPTIONAL CIGAR ROLLER, EDUARDO RIVERA. ONE DAY, SO LEGEND HAS IT, CASTRO SET UP A TEAM OF EXPERT ROLLERS IN A MANSION HOUSE IN A SUBURB OF HAVANA, EL LAGUITO (THE LITTLE LAKE) TO PRODUCE CIGARS.

AFTERWARDS, ON THE ADVICE OF CASTRO’S CLOSE CONFIDANTE, CELIA SANCHEZ, EL LAGUITO BECAME THE FIRST SCHOOL FOR WOMEN CIGAR ROLLERS. THE NAME COHIBA IS THE ANCIENT INDIAN WORD FOR THE BUNCHES OF TOBACCO LEAVES THAT COLUMBUS FIRST SAW BEING SMOKED BY THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF CUBA.

THE ORIGINAL COHIBA WERE RESERVED FOR THE PRESIDENT AND WERE ONLY SEEN OUTSIDE CUBA AS GIFTS FOR FOREIGN DIGNITARIES. THEN IN 1982 IT WAS DECIDED TO LAUNCH THREE SIZES TO THE PUBLIC EACH WITH A MEDIUM TO FULL FLAVOUR.
THE SELECTION IS THE KEY TO PRODUCING THE FINEST CIGARS. COHIBA BENEFITS FROM THE “SELECTION OF THE SELECTION” OF TOBACCOS FROM THE FIVE FINEST VEGAS FINAS DE PRIMERA (FIRST CLASS FIELDS) IN THE SAN LUIS AND SAN JUAN Y MARTINEZ ZONES OF THE VUELTA ABAJO TOBACCO REGION. TODAY, 44 YEARS AFTER ITS BIRTH, COHIBA IS FIRMLY ESTABLISHED. ITS SUCCESS IS SEEN AS THE STANDARD BEARER FOR QUALITY AND EXCELLENCE BY THE WHOLE CIGAR INDUSTRY.

Montecristo

Montecristo

MONTECRISTO WAS FIRST MADE IN HAVANA IN THE SUMMER OF 1935 AT THE PARTICULARES FACTORY BY ALONSO MENENDEZ. AROUND THIS TIME MENENDEZ JOINED FORCES WITH JOSÉ MANUEL „PEPÉ‟ GARCIA AND FOUNDED THE MENENDEZ Y GARCIA COMPANY. TOGETHER THEY DECIDED TO MAKE “MONTECRISTO”, WHICH NAME IS IN DEDICATION TO THE ALEXANDRE DUMAS’ NOVEL THE COUNT OF MONTECRISTO, AN EXCEPTIONAL BRAND.

THEIR GUIDING PRINCIPLE WAS THAT MONTECRISTO SHOULD BE OF ONE QUALITY ONLY – THE FINEST. PRODUCTION WOULD BE LOW, AND PRICES HIGH. IT WOULD BE SOLD ONLY IN A LIMITED NUMBER OF THE MOST REPUTABLE CIGAR MERCHANTS IN THE WORLD. IN 1937 AN OPPORTUNITY AROSE FOR MENENDEZ Y GARCIA TO EXPAND. THE H. UPMANN FACTORY IN HAVANA WAS UP FOR SALE. AFTER TORTUOUS NEGOTIATIONS ALONSO MENENDEZ BOUGHT IT FOR £100,000.

THROUGHOUT THE FOLLOWING SIX DECADES MONTECRISTO’S RANGE DEVELOPED AND ADAPTED TO THE CHANGING PREFERENCES OF THE CIGAR SMOKER. AS THE 1970S PROGRESSED DEMAND FOR MONTECRISTO TOOK OFF, AND BY 1980 IT WAS ESTABLISHED AS THE WORLD’S TOP-SELLING HANDMADE CIGAR BRAND; A POSITION IT STILL HOLDS TODAY.

Romeo

Romeo

THIS BRAND DATES BACK TO 1875 AND TAKES ITS NAME FROM WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE‟S STARCROSSED LOVERS IN HIS PLAY.

IN 1903, WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED BY DON „PEPIN‟ FERNANDEZ , A TALENTED PROMOTER AND WELL KNOWN SOCIALITE, THE FAME AND COMMERCIAL SUCCESS OF THESE CIGARS REALLY TOOK OFF.

IT IS SAID THAT, DURING HIS HEYDAY, UP TO 20,000 DIFFERENT BANDS WERE USED IN PRODUCTION.

TODAY ROMEO Y JULIETA IS THE SECOND MOST POPULAR CUBAN CIGAR HOUSE BEHIND MONTECRISTO AND LAST YEAR ACCOUNTED FOR AROUND 14% OF ALL HABANOS SOLD IN THE UK (DUTY PAID).

WITH A RANGE OF VITOLAS UNRIVALLED BY ANY OF ITS PEERS AND AN INCLUSIVE MEDIUM STRENGTH, IT LOOKS SET TO CONTINUE TO SATISFY A WIDE RANGE OF SMOKERS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

Punch

Punch

PUNCH WAS FIRST REGISTERED AS A CIGAR BRAND IN CUBA IN 1840 BY A GERMAN NAMED STOCKMANN, MAKING IT ONE OF THE VERY OLDEST CUBAN CIGAR BRANDS STILL IN CURRENT PRODUCTION. IN 1884 THE BRAND WAS PURCHASED BY MANUEL LOPEZ, THE MAN WHO OVERSAW ITS RISE TO GLOBAL FAME AND WHOSE NAME IS STILL COMMEMORATED ON THE PUNCH EMBLEM.

LOPEZ DIED IN 1925 AND THE BRAND WAS BOUGHT BY A YOUNG MAN NAMED FERNANDO PALICIO WITH HELP FROM THE BRITISH IMPORTER MELBOURNE HART & CO. GAINING THE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS FOR PUNCH IN THE UK AND THROUGHOUT THE BRITISH EMPIRE. A FEW YEARS LATER PALICIO AND MELBOURNE HART ALSO BOUGHT HOYO DE MONTERREY AND, FROM 1931, PRODUCTION OF BOTH BRANDS WAS AMALGAMATED INTO ONE FACTORY.

SINCE THE CUBAN REVOLUTION BOTH PUNCH AND HOYO HAVE REMAINED UNDER ONE ROOF AT LA CORONA, THIS VITOLA (SIZE) HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN THE FLAGSHIP PRESENTATION FROM PUNCH.
